Insecure Writer's Support Group - May - post #2

The purpose for the Insecure Writer's Support Group is to encourage one another and share things that we're dealing with in our writing ventures. Alex J. Cavanaugh (the IWSG's host) puts it best: It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
To join, click on the IWSG pic above and post on your blog the first Wednesday of every month.

This past month was rather "eh" for me and my writing. Anything I wrote seemed to not work together like I'd planned. Plot holes can really put a damper on things, and I was ready to say "Screw this."
Kimmy, one of my wonderful beta's and also my super cheerleader extraordinaire sensed something because, well, that's how awesome she is. We talked and I told her I wanted to hit the delete button, that I can't write, that my work is pathetic. She talked me down off the keyboard and to move away from the delete button. She told me that she loves my work and has faith that I will get there.
I'm learning to share in that faith.
Do I think I would've really quit? No, but I did need that push and those words of encouragement. Sometimes, we can't do it alone. And that's okay.

Do you ever get down on yourself? If so, what do you do to get back in the swing of things?

  1. Oh yeah! Especially when I felt the pressure to make my next book better than the first. (And now the third better than that.) Glad your friend talked you down.

  2. I get this way after rejections and it takes good friends to get me to keep sending them out.

  3. Thanks for dropping by, Jackie, I could have the honor of being your 100th follower. Congratulations! That's a huge milestone. It means there are many more successes to come.

What helps me: exercise, chocolate (reverse order is better, but I eat chocolate before and after exercise) and writing through it with a promise to myself that I need not share it with anyone.

    Glad to connect with you.
    Keep faith.

  4. I will feel very pathetic when I am rejected. It happens at work a lot. That is wy I started my blog. I feel like I am not great in writing at times. From a craft blog don't really expect great writings, right? But, still there is the grammar, and the other complications of English. That is why I joined the IWSG recently. Also joined another group to keep the blog going.
I don't write anything outside the blog though.

  5. Aw, thanks Jackie! Yes, it's true, I love Jackie's writing. It's also true that we all suffer through periods of doubt and frustration with our writing. I'm so glad I helped you out and kept up your faith because I MUST KNOW what happens to the characters in your wip or I will just DIE!!!! :)
Keep at it, honey. It WILL happen for you!

    1. It's tough being in those ruts. We can get through them, though, and our writing will be better because of it! :D

  10. Oh gosh, do I ever!! Some days are easier than others to get out of my rut. The month of April left me asking myself: "Omg, what the heck am I doing???" The best thing for me to do is get away from the computer, go outside and do something, anything but write. I end up feeling better when I'm done, and sometimes even inspired. :) Author Julia Cameron calls it filling the creative well. Of course, the "anything" you do has to be something enjoyable for you.

The Artist's Way is Julia's book. I didn't do the entire program, because it seemed too tedious (for me). But, she gave some great ideas for writers / artists.

Hope things get better soon, remember, IWSG is here for you, all you have to do is ask. :))

  11. Good friends help a lot. Also I find, if I'm in a funk, to just walk away for a little bit. Do something that makes me happy, then I usually come back to it with a better attitude.
